West Volusia Historical Society
To preserve and promote the history of West Volusia County
The WVHS is all about history. Our facilities include the Robert M. Conrad Educational and Research Center, the DeLand House Museum, and DeLand's Memorial Hospital and Military Museum. All of these locations make up the WVHS Complex and are used to help residents and visitors relate to the history of this area and serve as resources for anyone wanting to learn more about the preservation and protection of our history. Our many activities include:
Research and Preservation
We give high priority to historical research into all aspects of West Volusia's past, and to preserving pieces of that past to help everyone better understand the future.
The full worth of research and collection work is not realized, however, unless the information gained is shared freely We reach out to everyone, from children to seniors, through interesting and engaging lectures, workshops, and exhibits. Our services range from DVDS about St. Johns riverboats and horticulturist Lue Gim Gong to ECHO Rangers for children and the Oakdale Cemetery History Walk.
All of us are affected by the past, but not everyone is a history buff. For those not addicted, we plan and present many public events that entertain and instruct.
Museums, Libraries and Archives
The WVHS operations at 137 W. Michigan Ave. consist of the Henry A. DeLand House Museum and and the Robert M. Conrad Educational and Research Center, an archive/library and educational programming center, and the Lue Gim Gong Memorial Grove. The DeLand House Museum is Frame Vernacular architecture built in 1886 and is one of the city’s oldest buildings. It was remodeled to Neo-classical style c. 1900. Ninety-five percent of the period furnishings in the museum have been donated by interested, dedicated, generous citizens of the area. The interior showcases an extensive collection of period photographs, authentic artifacts and memorabilia that trace the history and development of DeLand and the surrounding area. The Robert M. Conrad Education and Research Center holds hundreds of vintage photos, maps, directories, phone books and genealogies from community histories dating from the late 1800s.
