In
1925, Mrs. Elizabeth
Burgess donated the money to build a small hospital
that would serve the area's Black patients. So, it is
quite fitting that this display of Black Heritage be
housed in a replica of the original Burgess Building.
Using
a collection of period artifacts dating from the early
1800's as well as household items and vintage photographs,
this gallery offers a portraying glimpse into early
life in the Black community of West Volusia. Also on
display is the dental chair of Dr. Poole, an early Black
dentist of the area.
