"History
is alive and well" should be the slogan for the West
Volusia Historical Society. This becomes apparent in the many
activities sponsored by the Society to disseminate the local
history in various and interesting ways, and to
provide the community with historical resources in an inviting
setting. On a daily basis, there is the operation of The
DeLand House Museum and the Memorial
Hospital Museum, as well as the continuing care
and acquisition of historical items. The Society's Speakers
Bureau is constantly being requested to present historically
centered programs to the schools, churches, civic clubs, and
service organizations. Most of these presentations are brought
to life with slides and videos from our extensive collection.
Every other year, the Society sponsors a tour of historic
homes which attracts people from all over the state. This
provides funds for scholarships each academic year to Stetson
University history majors. Our primary purpose
is to continue the acquisition of materials with historic
value and interest, the preservation and exhibition of these
items, to make them available for research, and to inform
the local residents of the rich heritage that is theirs. For
